Fire Put Out at Bitdeer’s Under-Construction Bitcoin Mine in Ohio, No Injuries Reported

A fire broke out Tuesday afternoon at Bitdeer’s bitcoin mining facility under construction in Massillon, Ohio, affecting two buildings within the complex.

According to local news outlet CantonRep and a company statement, the Massillon Fire Department responded to the blaze around 2 p.m. at 1115 Industrial Ave. SW and extinguished the flames shortly after arrival.

“The facility is under construction and site management is investigating to determine the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage,” Bitdeer said in a statement on X.

Fire Chief Matt Heck said no one was injured or hospitalized. The department did not require mutual aid assistance from neighboring fire units. Heck told CantonRep.com that two of the 24 buildings under construction were damaged. The fire reportedly started in one structure at the southeast corner of the site before wind carried flames to an adjoining building.

No servers or mining equipment had yet been installed in either structure. Investigators have not found any signs of arson and are looking into whether ongoing construction activity may have caused the fire. Heck said the damaged buildings may still be salvageable.

CantonRep reported that Bitdeer purchased roughly 19 acres for the project through its San Jose, California-based subsidiary, White Tail Creek LLC, for about $1.6 million in 2023. The site is expected to host a large-scale Bitcoin mining operation once completed.

It is unclear whether or how much the fire would affect Bitdeer’s construction progress as the company continues to scale its North American Bitcoin mining operations. According to Bitdeer’s October production update, the construction of the 221-megawatt (MW) site in Ohio is underway, and the full energization is expected in Q1 2026, with 21 MW to be energized this month.
