Anthropic’s $80.7 Billion First-Half Loss Driven by Financing Charges

Anthropic recorded an $80.7 billion net loss in the first half of 2026, largely reflecting accounting charges tied to its fundraising, as the Claude developer prepares for an initial public offering, according to a draft prospectus reviewed by Reuters.
The loss widened from $13 billion a year earlier and included a $72 billion charge reflecting an increase in the estimated value of bonds convertible into Anthropic shares. That charge represented a financing revaluation rather than cash costs from running the business.
Revenue reached $16.3 billion in the six months ended June 30, up from $1.1 billion a year earlier, the Wall Street Journal reported on October 20, citing the draft IPO prospectus. The nearly fifteenfold increase underscores the speed of Anthropic’s expansion, even as its disclosures expose customer concentration and substantial future computing requirements.
The distinction between accounting losses and cash spending is central to assessing those results. Subtracting the $72 billion charge leaves about $8.7 billion of net losses attributable to other items; that calculation alone does not establish either operating losses or cash burn.
Spending on computing capacity and infrastructure climbed to nearly $9 billion in the first half from $2.3 billion a year earlier. Anthropic has committed at least $518 billion over a decade to cloud services, computing and infrastructure.
The Journal reported that potential spending on computing capacity could reach $750 billion, including agreements still being negotiated. That broader figure includes prospective deals and should not be read as an amount already spent or fully contracted.
Revenue also remains concentrated. Two customers accounted for roughly one-fifth of first-half sales, and Anthropic expects a limited number of customers to continue generating a significant share of revenue, according to the Journal’s reporting.
More recent disclosures point to continued growth. At an October 14 investor meeting, Anthropic said third-quarter revenue reached $16.8 billion, up 45% from $11.6 billion in the second quarter. The company also told investors it was profitable on an adjusted basis. Those figures cover a later period and a different profit measure from the first-half net loss.
Anthropic’s expansion has been supported by repeated capital raising. On May 28, it announced $65 billion in funding at a $965 billion valuation, led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks and Sequoia Capital. The company said the proceeds would support research, additional computing capacity and product development.
Anthropic is expected to go public in November.
